Sister Cities Committee

Composition (Created by Resolution No. 038-19-15310 and reintroduced by Resolution No. 153-22-15906)

The Committee shall consist of five members. One person may represent more than one sister city if said person meets these requirements. All Committee members must have a desire to foster the sister city relationship between the City of South Miami and its sister cities. Members shall be appointed as set forth in the City Charter, Art. 11, Section 8, A. The Liaison Officer shall be appointed by the City Commission. All members shall serve a two-year term but may be replaced at the discretion of the City Commission member who appoints them. The Liaison Officer shall serve a two-year term unless the Officer is a member of the City Commission. If the Liaison Officer is a member of the City Commission, the Liaison Officer's term shall coincide with the member's term in office as a City Commission member. The Liaison Officer may be replaced by a vote of a majority of the members of the City Commission.

Duties

The Sister Cities Committee is established to develop and promote an active sister city relationship between the City of South Miami and all of its Sister Cities.

 The powers and duties of the Committee are to:

(1) Cause the people of the City and the people of foreign cities to acquire a consciousness of each other, to understand each other as individuals, as members of their community, as citizens of their country and as part of the family of nations.

(2) Promote a continuing relationship of mutual concern between the people of the City and the people of its sister cities. (3) Promote exchange of art, cultural, educational and business exchanges, including trade, tourism, diplomacy, best practices, and environmental initiatives between the City and its sister cities.
