Planning Board
Membership on the Planning and Zoning Board is specified in the following ordinance of the city code as enacted by the City of South Miami Commission.
Composition
2-23. The Planning and Zoning Board shall have the composition, functions and duties as provided by [former] Article V, Chapter 20 of this code and as altered, amended or changed hereafter. Section 20-6.1(B)(1)(a) of the Land Development Code. There is hereby created a local planning agency to be known as the South Miami Planning Board. The board shall be comprised of seven members who reside in the city. Members of the board shall be appointed as prescribed by the city charter. (amended 6-14-05 Ord. No. 20-05-1842)

Duties of the Board
- To investigate and recommend to the City Commission such changes in the boundaries of the various use districts, zoning regulations, use of land and type of construction, locations and use of all structures on any valid application submitted to it
- To review and make recommendations on all applications for a change in zoning district boundaries
- To periodically review and make recommendations relating to the provisions of the LDC Code
- To review and make recommendations relating to the determination and continuance of nonconforming uses
- To review and make recommendations on all applications for special uses
- To review and make recommendations on all applications for variances
